The Columbus Program
North American Study Abroad at Unicollege.
The Columbus Program is Unicollege's flagship initiative for academic collaboration with North America, bringing together a growing network of universities across the United States and Canada through direct institutional partnerships. Designed for degree-seeking students, visiting students, faculty, and professional staff, the program creates integrated opportunities for semester and year abroad experiences, faculty-led programs, research collaboration, internships, and academic mobility. More than an exchange program, Columbus represents a university-to-university ecosystem that connects institutions through shared academic standards, reciprocal trust, and long-term collaboration.
As an Italian accredited, English-speaking university, Unicollege offers a study abroad experience that is distinctive within Italy. Students study entirely in English while becoming part of an authentic Italian university community, learning alongside Italian students and faculty as well as visiting students from more than 90 partner universities across four continents. Rather than remaining within a single international cohort, participants experience everyday academic life in Italy while benefiting from the accessibility of an English-speaking environment.

The Columbus Program extends beyond traditional semester abroad opportunities by supporting a broad range of academic initiatives jointly developed by partner universities, including:
- Semester and Year Abroad Programs
- Tuition-reciprocal study abroad through bilateral agreements
- Faculty-Led Programs
- Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)
- Curricular Internships
- Academic Rotation Programs
- Joint Research and Visiting Scholar initiatives
- Double Degree pathways
- Pre-College and Summer Programs
- Faculty and Staff Mobility
Because these opportunities are developed directly between universities, curricula remain academically integrated, credits are recognized through established institutional precedents, and students receive official transcripts issued by accredited universities. Continuous academic advising ensures that every international experience forms an integral part of the student's degree rather than a standalone mobility period.
Direct institutional collaboration also makes international education more accessible. Many bilateral agreements provide tuition reciprocity, allowing students to study abroad without additional host-university tuition, while university-specific arrangements enable academic and financial models tailored to the needs of each partner institution.
To further expand access, Unicollege has established the Title IV Continuity Scholarship, an institutional initiative designed for students from U.S. universities already receiving Title IV financial aid. Inspired by the level of support students receive at their home institution, the scholarship promotes continuity in financial assistance while studying in Italy.
Faculty collaboration is supported through the Scholars' Grand Tour Fellowship, which provides complimentary accommodation and meal plans for accompanying faculty participating in eligible faculty-led and customized academic programs. Inspired by the historic Grand Tour, the Fellowship encourages the circulation of scholars, ideas, and research while strengthening long-term institutional partnerships.
